The Fourth Kind

11/8/2009

Foreward: I knew going in that the entire tale was a fabrication. It's all fakey-faked. The unfortunate truth is that the producers are pushing it as truth, up to and including hounding Wikipedia 24/7, which is pretty lol. That said, the fact that this will fool the dumb gullible masses is both brilliant and sickening. Away we go!

Since this is not a documentary by any stretch, I will review it objectively as any other movie, and boy howdy does it have some issues. It's decently well-acted and shot, sure, and the first half does a great job building tension around the central character.

Unfortunately, this does not last. At around the halfway point, the movie drops some "evidence" into the mix that confirms my fears that it was meant to be taken seriously, and therefore, every "scary" scene afterward just became hilarious. It wasn't just me; the entire audience was laughing out loud at some of the stupid shit on the screen. The very presence of this evidence is maddening; if it were real (even in the movie world), it would have been a crime to ignore it in the way the plot does. That alone should be a tipoff of "why have I never heard of this before?" in case you had an inkling of suspicion still. Sigh. The movie could have been a compelling psychological thriller about a woman's breakdown after the loss of her husband, but sadly, such an opportunity (and talent) was wasted.

Rating: If your eye muscles need a workout, by all means see it; you'll be rolling them so hard you might sprain something.
