Knight and Day

What a weird hybrid of a movie. The action is a little heavy for a straight-out chick flick, but the more "serious" lovey-dovey moments are too heavy for a straight comedy/shooter. That's a level of juxtaposition that is more awkward than charming. Unless the movie is meant to be a modern day "knight in shining armor" with the super-powerful man figure constantly saving the helpless damsel while being whisked away to exotic locales while protecting some magical macguffin, in which case the level of misogyny in this film makes Sex and the City 2 look like The Brave One.

Oh wait, this was supposed to be a movie review, or something. Anyway, content-wise, it's all over the place. There is, for instance, a running gag of the main characters escaping some impossible situation off-screen and then cutting to a blurry fade-in at some new location an impossible distance away. It's kind of funny, I guess, but after about the third time it just smacks of writer laziness. Mostly, though, I'm mad at how it was marketed. This is a rare instance where both the TV spots (which made it look like that other straight-up chick-and-spy movie that came out a little while ago that I can't remember and no one saw) and the movie trailers (which made the premise look like an escaped mental patient who thinks he's a superspy charms a ladyfriend and runs amok) both outright lied about what this movie really is - a sloppy, completely generic "action-comedy" that is far less clever than it thinks it is.

Rating: Good God, that was a lot of words about a terribly unoriginal summer action/date movie.
