Toy Story 3

I know I wrote "See it," but that is with a rather prominent asterisk. Here goes!

You know how the main complaint with the Shrek movies is "It's the same movie again and again"? Yyyyyeah, you know the drill. Rampant jealousy of Woody, Buzz loses his goddamn mind, recycled bad guy from Number Two, and the same universal identity crisis and definition of "worth," just with the stakes upped slightly. Sure, there were a few cute new character additions and a (rather obvious) new setting to explore, but it felt remarkably like the same damn movie again, and not in a touching nostalgic way. Up seemed far superior in emotional tugs and humor both.

That's not to say Number Three is bad by any stretch, and it deserves every dime of the $300 million it'll make this week. The animation is astounding, the writing is excellent, and there are quite a few "oh shit" moments to keep you hooked, along with a super syrupy sweet ending. Ken and Barbie are an amazing addition, and I say in a totally straight manner that I would pay money to watch a Pixar movie of just those two for a couple hours.

Rating: Typical Pixar fare, for better or for worse. I heard a lot of people walking out say how it was "cute," and that's really the best word for it. Also, a whole lot of gay innuendo for a G-rated movie. What the hell are we teaching those punk kids nowadays?
