Dragon Quest V
8/30/2009
Title: Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Platform: Nintendo DS
Genre: Old-School RPG
I'd never played a Dragon Quest title before this one, and picked it up on a whim, but I'm slightly ashamed at how adorable I find this game. The dialog, the monster names, the spell names, the first couple of hours - it's all so cute! And not in the typical JAPAN KAWAAAAAI NEKO =^..^= brain-hemorrhage-patient way. It's childlike and endearing, and I love it.
That being said, holy crap this game is hard.
Now part of it is my fault. My first few attempts eschewed grinding in favor of diving headlong into the next dungeons as they came, and booooy oh boy was this a mistake. To top it all off, some of the enemies are annoying as shit down the road - we're talking party-wide stunlocks and critters with ridiculously high defense, and forget about running (which works maybe 10% of the time). This game is a brutal testament to the 16-bit era, by but God do I still love it. Definitely not for sissies.
